Angel
flight 1 by Tony Lanzi Comment by Tony
"A pristine start to the day. Clear skies, warm 18C start early at 5.30am Gold Coast airport, not a sole to be seen except the security officer whistling as he walked up the airstrip to let us in. Tony Lanzi, Angel Flight pilot, and his partner Linda took off for their Angel pick up in Chinchilla in a 172 Cessna.
Flying at 5,500ft in a head wind of 20-25kts the view was spectacular. Valleys filled with fog tumbling off cliffs like waterfalls over the range. Looking back towards the coast you could clearly see the ocean from Toowoomba. Then the distinct contrast of patch work farm lands of the Darling Downs to Chinchilla that seem to take forever to get there.
Negotiating a lumpy, bumpy airstrip then greeted by those small, over friendly flies, and young Kayla and her grandmother Pam. Well seasoned travellers, Kayla’s log book crammed with entries, recording her weekly trips to Brisbane for Dialysis. Meeting someone like Kayla makes you realise how lucky you are, and how brave she is at such a young age.
Unlike the trip over, we experienced strong tail winds that cut time off our trip. Flying over the steep drop from Toowoomba, a little turbulence to which Pam stated .... Kayla loves it rough - it adds excitement to the trip she’s taken so many times before”, then we heard a familiar voice over the airways.. Barry and Cheryl in KDF who sent Kayla their best wishes went flying past, making us look like we were standing still. Time slipped away very quickly, we were almost there.
Archerfield airport was very busy as usual. Planes doing circuits, travellers and people departing all cris crossing and circling around at the same time. A large flock of water ducks went hurling past and down we went.. cross winds and a nice soft landing. Our passengers left to catch their ride to the hospital and we headed back home to the coast. A wonderful morning in all. Can’t wait to do it again."
