For volunteer pilot Craig Hobart, every Angel Flight mission carries meaning but some journeys leave a particularly lasting impression.
Recently, Craig took to the skies from Southport Flying Club, to return two very special families to Cunnamulla, after their once-in-a-lifetime Brisbane Broncos experience. Nominated through our long-standing partners at BUSHkids, these families were selected for a compassionate flight designed to bring joy, recognition, and unforgettable memories to children from regional Queensland.
On board were six-year-old Miles and his dad Stephen, along with 12-year-old Chloe and her mum Beccy. Both children were nominated by their schools in Cunnamulla for their resilience, character, and engagement. Miles, a devoted Broncos fan, has been accessing BUSHkids services for several years, while Chloe was recognised for consistently demonstrating strong school values, teamwork, and enthusiasm for learning.
Their destination? A full Brisbane Broncos experience.
From the moment they arrived, the families were immersed in a whirlwind of activity. They attended the Broncos’ Captain’s Run, meeting players, collecting signatures, and snapping photos with their heroes. The excitement didn’t stop there, exploring South Bank, riding the Channel 7 Wheel, and visiting the Queensland Museum added to the adventure.
A particularly meaningful moment came during their visit to the BUSHkids telehealth centre in Toowong. For Miles, this was a chance to see behind the screen meeting the clinicians and discovering where his speech pathology sessions take place. It was a powerful connection between his everyday care and the people who support him.
The itinerary continued with bowling, laser tag, and even a tour of Parliament House. But the highlight for these passionate Broncos fans came on Thursday night, 12 March, at Suncorp Stadium. Watching the Broncos take on the Parramatta Eels from the sidelines, the children had the incredible opportunity to high-five players as they ran onto the field. They even met the halftime performer, American country music artist Riley Green.
In total, 12 children from regional Queensland were invited to Brisbane for this special experience, many visiting the city for the very first time.
For Craig, being part of this journey was deeply rewarding:
“Flying these families home wasn’t just about getting them from A to B—it was about opening the door to an experience they’ll carry with them forever. Seeing the kids light up when they talked about meeting the players and everything they’d done, it’s something I won’t forget in a hurry. It’s a real privilege to be part of that.”
This mission is a beautiful example of what’s possible through the collaboration between Angel Flight and BUSHkids, connecting rural families not just to essential services, but to moments of joy, recognition, and opportunity.
And for Miles, Chloe, and their families, it’s safe to say this was a trip they’ll never forget.
