Rural Medi-Flights
Taking Health Professionals
to the Bush and Beyond
Angel Flight Australia is a national charity that for the past 21 years has coordinated free non-emergency flights to help country people dealing with the triple trouble of bad health, poor finances and daunting distance. In 2021, the organisation responded to the growing rural health crisis by beginning to transport health professionals in and out of rural and remote areas. Over the past three years the organisation has seen an increase in demand for this service and once again has jumped into action by launching a dedicated Rural Medi-Flight service. With government funding we can achieve our goal of closing the gap between health care in the cities and our rural communities.
Our first aircraft is named ‘Kayla’ in honour of our passenger who flew with us 400 times but sadly lost her health battle, at age 23.
ABOUT THE SERVICE
Beginning operations in early 2024 the aircraft’s home base is in Archerfield, Brisbane. This aircraft’s primary purpose, under airline safety standards, will be to transport health professionals to rural and remote communities throughout Queensland. Our plans for expansion will continue our national operation with a dedicated aircraft in each capital city, Cairns and Port Hedland.
The medical support 8-10 seat cabin-class twin-engine aircraft, will service health professionals for a small fraction of the cost of larger air ambulance aircraft allowing health providers to reach more country people more often.
Our aircraft have the ability to land at all country town airfields, and most communities across Australia, with high-speed safe transport, allowing a greater percentage of flights in often changing weather conditions.

Our Parallel runaway
To date Angel Flight has serviced 340 communities across Australia, ensuring everyday people living in the bush get access to care and support taken for granted by those living in capital cities. Angel Flight will continue to offer free non-emergency flights to people in need through the generosity of our team of volunteer pilots and drivers while we embark on our parallel runway. For too many remote communities, access to much-needed health care is out of reach and there is a gap in the market for consistent and familiar medical professionals who both work and live in the community. Angel Flight has partnered with Ochre Health and other national health organisations to bring health professionals and students to live and work in rural communities, offering access to flights to and from ‘home base’ when required.
OUR RURAL MEDI-FLIGHTS PILOTS
The dedicated air service will operate to the highest standards, under the Air Transport Category and flown by highly experienced airline pilots with Instructor and Check and Training Captain status.
We have also engaged another highly qualified airline transport pilot as safety manager. As the service progresses, there will be a permanent pilot based in each capital city, in addition to the appropriately qualified volunteers who will continue the current community service.
